Reply from Norwegian Royal Ministry of Foreign. By: "Alex Alex" Here is the reply I received today as a response to my emails with media articles and victims accounts to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of International Development and Human rights of Norway. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Royal Ministry of Foreign Affairs The State Secretary Oslo, 21 July 1998 <Address deleted by IndoChaos for security reasons>
Thank you for your e-mail messages to Mr. Knut Vollebæk, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Ms. Hilde Frafjord Johnson, Minister of International Development and Human Rights, dated 11 June 1998 and the attached documentation on human rights violations committed against Indonesians of Chinese origin. We have taken note of the views expressed in this documentation. Norwegian authorities have, together with representatives from many other countries, expressed concern over human rights violations in Indoneisa, including the violation of the human rights of minority communities. In connection with the upsurge in violence and the loss of life in Indonesia in May of this year, Norway together with the European Union and other European countries, called on the Indonesian Government to investigate thoroughly the reported deaths and the allegations of kidnapping and torture and to ensure that those responsible were made accountable for their actions. In a meeting with the Indonesian Ambassador to Norway on 20 May, I reiterated this statement.
Yours sincerely Janne Haaland Matlary ---------------------------------------------------------------------------Postal Address: P.O. Box 8114 DEP. N-0032 Oslo Norway Office Address: 7. juni plassen/ Victoria Terrasse 0251 Oslo
